85hp rude got it running

I have a 1972 85 hp rude that I just bought a few days ago. It had no fire and I took a amplifier off my 1970 85 hp rude put it on and it got fire but would still would not start. It had good compression and spark so I knew it should start. Anyway to make a long story short one of you guys in here told me it may be turning over too slow. I charged up my battery sprayed some mix fuel in the carbs and it fired up real quick. Now I have to wait for the weather to warm up, the next day or so, and put some muffs on it.

Thank you for sharing that.

About half the firing problems with the older V4 engines could probably be overcome with bigger, fully charged batteries and properly set up chokes; at least if they try that before fouling up the timing or blowing the power packs.

It is hard to get people to believe it unless they read it from those who have had the experience, so, thanks again.

Your right, I was trying to start it with the old battery that came with the boat. Then I took the bigger newer battery out of my ranger and slow charged it for a couple of days and it fired right up. It must of turned over at least twice as fast and was almost a instant start.

I am a auto mechanic but not a outboard mechanic so I am really happy with myself as this is the first one I have ever fixed.

they have to turn +- 300rpms to start.

Great, glad to hear you got her to turn over and fire. Persistance and great advice is also a great contributor.

It still will not idle so tomorrow i am going to take the carbs off my other moter and see what she will do
