I have a 1970 85 hp rude and I bought me a boat with a 1972 85 hp rude for parts. I only gave 300 for it, anyway I was going to use it just for parts but it kinda looked better than mine. The 70 runs great:) but I figure two running motors or better than one:). I also wanted some experience working on them, I am a machanic but not a outboard machanic. The 72 was not getting fire so I read the manual did the test and it was the amplfier, took it off the other one taped a wire and now it gets fire. Still won/t start, did a compression test close to 120 on all of them.

When I pump the bulb, it does not seem to want to pump up full, there is a little gas leak comming from the connector. Will that stop it from starting or do you think the floats or stuck thereby causing the bulb not to pump up fully? I do not know how long this motor has been sitting. He said he had it running last year but you know how that goes.

arrow on bulb point toward motor, hold bulb vertical, with arrow up. they usually pump better that way. if it doesn't get hard, leak in hose some where, floats stuck open. you can remove the carb silencer, and use a spray bottle, and spray premixed fuel into the carb, see if it will fire.

Check out "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs, Patrick.

85hp 1972 rude still will not start. Was not getting any fire so I replaced the amplifier and it gets fire. I even sprayed gas in the carbs but nothing. Just cranks. Maybe the fire is too weak . guess my next step is to pull off the fly wheel and check the points?

Did you follow JB's advice by following his step by step procedure in the "Outboard Wont Start" thread?

If compression is good, she's getting fuel, and there is a strong spark, she should fire. Have you tested spark? Should jump the gap on an inline spark tester a good 7/16 of an inch with a bright blue ZAP!!

They should. You can get a cheap inline tester such as this for under 15 bucks.

When working on bigger hp motors, the multi way testers are ideal.

I use a spark tester from advance/discount around $8 works fine.

Make sure the battery is fully charged, you can use your cars battery to eliminate the possibility of being the battery. It may spin fast, but just not fast enough.
