I replaced my Water Pump and thermostat, while I was inside the lower unit I looked for corrosion and didn't see any. The water is peeing out of the hole full speed and it runs like a champ but the water is peeing pretty hot. I took it to the lake last week and for about 30 minutes the water was cool(same as the temp of the lake), I checked it again and it was hot again. Can't afford to take it in. I do have the seloc manual, someone told me that there is some kind of grommet attached to the bottom of the powerhead that may be stopping the circulation through the head. I am not sure if this is something that I should attempt myself. Does the powerhead come off in one piece?....Any help would be appreciated. By the way the old water pump impellor was in one piece and in good condition so I don't think a piece is stuck in the motor. I have also heard of hooking up the hose to the water intake tube inside the lower unit and trying to blow it out, Has anyone tried this???...Thanks in advance for any help........Warren

Warren,

Is the engine actually running hot? Can you put your fingers on the flat spot behind the head for several seconds or is it to hot to touch?

The gommet you speak of is the water tube grommet attache to the end of the water tube where it meets the head. The older style grommet had a tendency on occasion to "mush" out and restrict the flow of water to the head from the pump. Changing it requires pulling the head and then the exhaust tube to get at it.

Re: 86 15hp evinrude Still Running Hot?????

Thanks for the reply, yea i'm pretty sure its running too hot. The block gets too hot to touch for more than a few seconds. I can't understand it, the water coming out of the tell-tail used to be cool all the time now its hot, I was thinking maybe it was a piston problem but it runs great. Is it a hard job getting to that grommet??????Any other suggestions.......

The water will not come out of the discharge holes until the Thermostat opens...did you maybe install it wrong?

TMD

I'm sure its in there right. I already checked 3 times. Hey is there a way to check the thermostat? I know for a car you put it in hot water on the stove, can I do this with a boat thermostat??????

What happends if you remove the thermostate ?, in my theory the engine shuld be running colder ( to cold), if all water channels are open.
What´s the difference car or outboard thermostate ?
A car thermostate opens at 85 c - 95 c
A outboard opens at ?? .
One other thing , does this engine have any "Pressure release valve " if so , look at it .
I got that problem on an old 50 hp , the parts were missing  .

Finally catching back up with your post Warren.

At idle, your 15hp should idle at an engine temp of 140 to 145 degrees on the flat spot on top just behind the head. You should be able to hold your finger there for a few seconds.

Droll has a good point, remove the t-stat and run the engine. It should only get warm at best. There is no pressure relief vlv in your engine.

Do you run in fresh water or salt?

Re: 86 15hp evinrude Still Running Hot?????

I run it in fresh and salt but I always flush it really good (usually in a drum) when I fish in the ocean. I did Try it with the thermostat out and it ran cooler but was still warm. Can I run it like a car without it out? I am thinking about trying to remove the powerhead myself and check out that grommet on the water intake tube. Do you think that could be it?......AAAAAAAHHHHHH this motor is killing me....Thanks for the help and advice.....Warren

It could be running fine... I thought mine was overheating too because the flat spot behind the flywheel I could only touch for 2-3 seconds before I needed to remove to avoid a burn. But when I put an IR temp gun onto the top, it read about 150 degrees F average at idle, which would appear to be in the normal range. It dropped to 144 or so with a bit of throttle (and hence more water pressure/flow to cool it). It was fluctuating with the thermostat opening and closing which is correct, and this thermostat action also affected the temperature of the water coming from the tell-tale, which is also logical.

Invest in an IR temp gun (with a laser guide pointer). They are great!
