Glad to hear your paint hardened up for you. One less thing to haunt you in your sleep or lack there of while laying in bed.

Thanks! It is still a little soft. Hasnt fully cured yet, but I think it is going to harden nicely. If not, I will ride it out for this season, then strip it down next year and go with an acrylic enamel. Either way, it wont leave me stranded on the water or keep me on the drydock so I am happy!!

Strange that it wouldn't harden up for you after over a week. I wonder about the paint and if it was good or not. The rusto poly I used said it had a 2 year shelf life. I'm not sure why such a short shelf life but maybe the place you bought the paint had it sitting around too long. That rusto was hard in 3 days and like a slick rock after a week. Everything's looking great though, have fun on the water!

One thing for sure, after a month everything should be cured, even that 5200 is hard by then...

Yea I'm beginning to think the primer was a bit old. Whatever only time will tell. It'll only take me two days to strip, prime and topcoat it if I have to do it again. Live and learn.

P.S. look at all that spent fogging oil on my prop/Lower unit. Should I use engine degreaser or I that terrible for paint?

I may be wrong, but that transducer is way to close to the motor. Probably gonna cause of lot of interference(waves, bubbles etc) for the transducer.

Bonaire, not sure if you have heard much about the humminbird dual purpose transducers. It has to see a full 180 degrees and still get 2d readings. I am a member over at humminbird side imaging forums and one of the tech support/sales reps there told me to mount it exactly in that location.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

That looks great. What was the material you used for the bracket?

Thanks Chem. I used a piece of rot free PVC trim from lowes 3.5in wide. Smallest piece they had was 8' and it was $13. Keep in mind that a new ducer board from bass pro isn't much more, but I liked the idea of hooding my own length, angling the ends, and being able to replace the board with an exact replica if I have to move that ducer around and put holes all in this first (trial) board. Screws hold tight and caught very well.

I love that PVC board. I made my dash in the Jupiter and the bow piece on the SS out of it.

Sweet! Glad to hear that others have had good experiences with that stuff.

Re: '86 Aluminum Starcraft Restoration

Watermann, it has been just over two weeks now and the paint is yet even harder than it was last week. I have to really try and dig into it to get into the paint. A few days after I painted it you could literally smear the paint and shift it. I wish that I had a garage that I could have left her in there to cure for a few weeks, but nothings perfect right? It still looks amazing compared to how it did. I can not believe how close she is to being entirely finished. Just a few more odds and ends.....

That's good info. Never knew that. I have a Humminbird Down Imaging unit and think my transducer needs to be farther out from the motor than yours....but then again I may be mistaken about that also.

I have the HB DI unit too and I believe the specs state 18" away from the C/L of the transom.

I also thought Pete had his 'ducer too close to the motor 'til I read his reply.

Yea they do!! One of the posters there(the one who's advice I followed) is a H-bird tech an sales rep. Who else's advice would you rather follow? :) and yes, a water test is in the very near future!
