ive currently got the engine pulled in and i need to figure out how to remove the outdrive, i can see that i have to remove the bell housing adapter but im not sure how to get to it, it appears i may have to dis-assemble the outdrive to get everything off, does anyone have a step by step on how to do this? im pretty sure its a penta 275 outdrive, my boat is a 1986 bayliner capri 2.3L 19.5 foot open bow.

the hull of the boat is in good shape, the interior appears to be in good shape (couple soft spots in the floor) but the transom is rotten, first trip to the water with the boat never even got off the trailer, i noticed water coming in pretty bad, then i noticed that the bolts were pulling into the wood transom, im 99% sure that i can replace the transom once i get the outdrive removed, it only took an hour to remove the engine, but i dont have a clue what to do to remove the outdrive.

To remove the flywheel cover, you need to remove the upper gear box at a minimum. You would then remove the six bolts holding it in place behind the upper part of the outdrive.

However, in your case, since your replacing the transum, You may as well remove the entire outdrive from the transom shield since the transom shield has to come off.

Start by downloading the manual for your outdrive and engine. there isn't a manual for the 275 outdrive so I follow the 280 manual for the most part.

this is a link to the Volvo info page in the Adults only section sticky at the top of the I/O forum.

I've got to run now, I'll post some more info later.

Welcome to Iboats BTW.:)

There really isn't any manuals that shows how to dissasemble the drive and the transom shield for your model drive. The service manual shows how to remove the outdrive, but not everything else.
Here is an installation manual for a diesel, the drive and transom shield are shaped a little different, but the process is the same. Just start from the back and work toward the front of the book.

thanks guys, i looked at the manual for the 280 and did alittle trial and error, i got the outdrive removed, now i just need to get the flywheel shield, and power tilt/trim piece removed, and i shoudl have it all removed, i want to get the entire wooden part of the transom removed, its about 24" x30" give or take, im going to put some new treated wood in it, and re-fiberglass the entire area, im not too concerned about the soft floors as long as they hold up for the summer, ill replace them next year, but for now, i really want to get the boat water ready, the volvo 2.3L seems to run good, and the outdrive seems to go into gears properly

You don't need to remove the tilt mechanism to remove the transome plate. It's much easier to pull it out later for inspecting, cleaning, testing, lubricating, and repainting. Below are some pictures of my complete assembly after pulling it from the transom. Needed lots of elbow grease to clean it up. Hope that helps see what it looks like. As an FYI, the six bolts can be replaced with standard galvanized carriage bolts.

Just replacing the transom and not the stringers and deck this season sure seems like a lot of repeat work. The reality of it is that you'll probably see much more rot and damage than what you expected. Keep your fingers crossed but don't be blind. There's plenty of help in the resto section when you get to that point.

Re: 86 bayliner capri 2.3L with penta outdrive, transom replacement questions

yep got it all out right now, the wood transom is junk, completely, the wood fell out of it like paper, i was surprised at how thick the hull is, its probably 10-13MM thick.

i guess i need to get one of those saws that will cut the fiberglass on the fiberglas transom cover that covers the wood from the inside, that way i can cut it out, without damaging anything on teh outter hull.

oh, the stringers on my boat appear to be in pretty good shape, i just have a couple seams in the wooden deck that are weak where they were not glued/sealed very well.

ive noticed that there is a shaft between the flywheel and the outdrive, this shaft has what appears to possibly be a bearing in the middle of it, *IF* it does have a bearing, this one is flat worn out so i guess im going to have to replace that, also the rubber boot that covers the U joint for the out drive fell apart, is that something that can be purchased easily?

Yes replace the bearings in the flywheel cover. You need the two sets of bearings and the two seals. Good to do it now since the engine must be pulled to change them.
