You might also check to see if the vent for the fuel tank is clogged, or restricted in some other way.

Re: 86 evinrude V6 150

Again I must say that this site is the best! Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I will begin by stating or restating that the plugs were changed, and the motor ran fine for about 20 minutes then died again..... I have not tested separatly from a 6 gallon tank. The boat is equipped with a water/fuel separater and as far as being checked I wish I could say that I have personally but I have not! :( The mechanic is working on it as we speak and I was just looking for some things to tell him to check or ask if he checked and I have my list right here. Thanks again and hopefully I will be able to return the favor one day!
Good fishin to all
oshi!

Re: 86 evinrude V6 150

Oshi.... I just came across your post and will add my comments.

The problem you have indicates to me that you have ignition at first, then it is lost after it warms up. This is typical of the OMC engines that incorporate the 35amp charging system. The stator under the flywheel runs extremely hot and in time the large black coils on the rear of the stator (beginning of the ignition system) melt down. You may be able to see the melt down dripping from those black coils simply by looking under the flywheel, however I'd recommend haveing the flywheel and the stator removed for percise viewing.

Usually a faulty, melting stator when cold will still have enough power (300v AC) to energize the powerpack(s) for a short time, but as it warms up, that power dissipates, the powerpack fails to energize, and ignition is lost.

You could also have a ignition switch that is failing, and at the present time is intermitent. This can be tested by simply removing the black/yellow wire (kill circuit) from the back of the ignition switch, then running the engine. If the problem is now non existent, replace the ignition switch.

Hi Joe!
I was wondering when you would post your opinion...(having 30 plus years on OMC engines stood out to me! ;) ) I thought about mentioning you directly, but I did not know if I could do that! Anyway, I am going to print out what you and the others have said and show it to the mechaninc and see what he thinks. Am I looking at further trouble down the road? Thanks again!
oshi

good fishing to all

Oshi - Thanks for sharing "the rest of the story." It is too bad that many folks get help here and never get back and post the results.
