86 Force 125 tachometer problem

The tach on my 86 Bayliner seems to read fine at low RPM, but never goes above ~2500. I'm pretty certain the engine is running about 2500 RPM - it gets up on plane right away and at full throttle it will do about 40 MPH (still showing about 2500 on the tach)

Any idea why the tach would read wrong at higher RPM?

Do you have the right tach on it? That motor requires a 20 pole tach.

Yep - it's the right tach, the factory US marine one. It looks like this:

does it say 20 pole on the back? the one you link to on ebay is the wrong tach for your motor!

It appears that tach is for a 4 cycle motor.
