can anyone tell me why ? when i hook up a timing light to the number one the timing marks are off by about 180 degrees the motor seems to run fine at idle but at wot i can only get about 4200 rpm thought it might be the timing

Just a guess, try hooking your timing light to number three.

labawg is right but always best to check the timing marks..screwdriver down pulg hole and see when its at tdc......then count the teeth on the starter to see how many degrees each gap is ( onl less gap than number of teeth and mark up you WOT timing point

Would be nice to know what size engine! If it is a 2 cylinder points ignition engine, some had two timing marks for TDC on the flywheel 180 degrees apart. That way, each set of points could be set separately and equally. AND if you put the timing light pick-up on the wrong cylinder, then timing will be 180 degrees off.

Frank you make me laugh. I've been tweaking my four cylinder so much(and loving it) that sometime I forget some outboards have fewer!
