Hello all,

This is my second go at a resto. The 1st being a little Aqualift i recieved gutted to the glass hull. So that was almost a joke compared to this new trihull:eek: The thought of starting the demo of the deck/stringers/transom scares me to death. I had so much fun building up the glastron from the hull, now i get to see what the de-construction side is about:rolleyes: Ill post pics as soon as my grinder/cutout tool find there way back to me from the neighbors..or should i say..As soon as I go bring my neighbor a cold beer, and pry my tools outta his hands (while I explain that i helped him with bondo work..and now its payback time in the form of itchy fiberglass!!)
I guess im just not sure where to start on gutting this beast.(besides the obvious..Carpet/seats..ect)

P.S..... the only reason i accepted this soggy trihull, was the trailor it is sitting on, and the price....$0:D

Man just dive in !!!! Are you fully pulling the top ?? you have to atleast lift it in the trasom !! when your doing that just make sure your hull is supported well !!

Get your wood asap , and get it drying !!

Thank you for the kind words John!! I just got my tools back today, yet the rain seems like it wants me to hold off:rolleyes: I need to think about building this project its own makeshift enclosure to work in...any ideas on this? 2x4's and ply/tarp? Im not sure i want to pull the cap, but i kbow i must for the transom. My question is, IF the deck is easily accesible to remove without popping the cap, can it/should it wait till i address the transom? Im no carpenter, but if i need to build a hull-brace, i suppose id need to start on that before even gutting this trihull? Again, thanks for any/all advice!

Sincerly, Scared S---less;)

HAHAHAH Its going to scare yea till you get on there and grinding !! then your going to say what the heck was I so scared of !! and let me tell you if i can do it you surly can !!!!

What I did was put 4 jack stands under her and I didnt fully pull the top . just proped it up off the transom !!! the 4 jack stands held it just fine , just dont put them on the outer wings !! on my tri-hull there is two flats thats where I put them !!

Have you looked threw my thread ? if I were to do it again I would petty much fo it the same way !!

Ok post lots of pics , the guys really do like pics !! lol John

Re: 86' muskie 550

Back from ripping up most of the deck, And now ive come to the stringers...if you wanna call them that:eek: I have only 2 stringers in the boat. BUT.....there not wood at all...There 11inch wide x 14inch tall FOAM with a very thick FIBERGLASS MATTING around the foam!!!

What to do...What to do... Do I need to rebuild theese the samy way? (Foam w/ mat covering) Or can i grind em out, and make my own ply stringers?? Im soo lost here lol. I still have some old deck removal before i get to grinding anything, but I surely need to know what im gonna do about theese "Stringers" so i can get more wood drying if need be!!!:(

Re: 86' muskie 550

And along comes yet another question...

There is all this Hard foam under the cap. Im going to go the route of only poping the cap above the transom i think. This foam needs to be removed to pop this part of the cap off the hull..sooo what is all this foam for? and do i need to replace it? if so then with what brand of foam product?

Re: 86' muskie 550

Hmmmm no ideas on these stringers..

I have thought of cutting the top off theese stringers and removing the old foam, then replacing it with 2lb pour foam, replacing the tops i cut, then glass over the whole thing.....is this a bad idea? if so then why, and what might my other options be? Im down to the grinding, and theese stringers, but im not sure on what to do. Also all that yellow hard foam on the underside of the cap makes it impossible to pop at the transom unless removed..Is this a problem if i dont replace this water sucking foam on the underside of the cap??

Is the foam inside the stringer water logged?

Unfortunatly Ondarvr, yes. This foam is soaked. It looks like spray foam (same stuff as expanding insulation foam, you can see some that was added outside the left stringer in the pic. Bumpy, yellow, spray foam) IF i can get away with "topping" theese stringers, and removing/replacing this foam, then fiberglassing over them, that would be waaay more simple than grinding them out and trying to fab 11inch wide stringers with ply:eek:

As always, Thanks

Re: 86' muskie 550

oh.....watch the height...if you cut the top....just try to cut space to get the tool in to remove the wet foam......

if you have to open it right up.....you might end up with a wavy stringer top......that makes it hard to tie down the deck.

i took a chain saw to the top of the stringers on a campion.....chain sawed all the foam out in less than an hour....i left the stringer height as is ....it was easy to match the deck height.

Re: 86' muskie 550

Thats what I was hoping to hear:D Ill cut a few extraction holes in the tops..remove this soaked foam, and then fill with pour foam. And with glassing over theese molded glass stringers, can/Should I use the poly i have? Or am I going to need some epoxy?? first time for me on fiberglass.. And yes oops, i have read your massive, mind melting thread, altho i should have probably read it in parts, cause after the 3rd hour of reading I think my brain went to sleep:D Thanks all, and More pics to come

Re: 86' muskie 550

Update...

Grinding, Grinding, and did i mention some grinding??
I didnt get any pics of grinding cause im busy with, um, grinding lol. Got bolth of the glass stringers completly hollowed out of the old foam. Only about the top 1/4in. of the foam in the stringers was wet, but it all came out because i didnt want my $150 worth of pour foam to be poured ontop of old polyfoam..The method i used to remove this foam from the hollow glass stringers was...I Cut four 3 inch extraction holes along each of the stringers. Then I Used my dad's Electric 3 speed roto-router (hes a plumber) Set on the "low" setting with the "grabber" bit on a 6ft. snake(note my lack of plumbing terminology:D) That thing ripped up that old poly foam like butter...all i did was drink a beer while i guided the bit away from the hull, and the foam met its demise. Then I happily put the end of the shop vac in each of the extraction holes till all the foam bits were gone....there were a few bits of stubbern foam left that met the business end of the anglegrinder...its been rainy here for the last 2 days, so the pour foam has been set aside for the time being. Im finding it hard to work under the consoles...So im 50-50 on taking off the cap..anywho, long post and no pics..ill get some up soon.
