I was having trouble with it overheating, so I installed a new impeller and the overheating problem stopped. Now there is a new problem. The engine will start fine and run good for the first 5 or 10 minutes, but then it will begin to sputter, and will contine to do so for the rest of the day. The next day it will start fine again, and then sputter. I was thinking maybe it was bad plugs or it wasn't getting the fuel it needed. The motor also is not getting the power that it is supposed to. The guy I bought it from said it was converted to a 15, but I can't even keep up with other 9.9s. The boat won't even plane out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

zville doc

Has this engine ever run correctly while you have owned it? You should read the FAQ regarding engine tune ups. You will need to check spark, carbs, and fuel pump. What do the plugs look like?

What, I wonder, did the previous owner do to convert it to a 15? Did he know what he was doing or did he do something studpid like just change the jets?

Well the previous owner said this model could be converted by simply changing the carb. I know the previous owner, and he ran the boat for 10 years before he let it sit for 2. When he was running it it outran any 9.9 and ran better than a lot of 15s. But it has not ran correctly since I have had it(for only two weeks). I just put new plugs in it today to see if it corrects the problem, even though the old plugs don't look that bad.

When it starts to sputter, try choking it. If that helps you have crud in the carbs and need to do a thorough carb clean/rebuild. Also, try pumping the fuel bulb when it starts to sputter. If that helps you need to rebuild the fuel pump. It could also be something electrical that acts up when it gets hot. How hot did the engine get during your previous overheat episode?

Re: 86 suzuki 9.9

Before the overheat episode, the engine never sputtered, but i also had different spark plugs. I changed the spark plugs back to the recommended kind and am going to put it in the water tomorow to see how it runs. When I took off the engine cover, I also noticed that the spark plugs were extremely loose and were leaking oil ang gas from around the plugs. Could this have been a possible source of sputtering and a loss of power? I cleaned the jets and carb really good, checked the fuel lines, and cleaned the fuel filter. Is there supposed to be a air filter in the air intake box? The black box is empty, with nothing in it. For some reason I believe there should be some kind of a filter.

Did the over heat cause damage? Do a comp test. Top cyl may have got too hot.

No air filter on outboards. The black box is just a silencer for the carbs. My boat doesn't kick up a lot of dust when I run it in the water. When you get yours running right yours won't need an air filter either.

Depending on how loose the plugs were that may have affected the engine performance. A compression check following an overheat episode is a good idea.
