I'm trying to get this motor started. I first started with a click when I turned the key. After doing some research and getting some help. I ended up bypassing the Neg. battery wire with a jumper cables and was able to get the motor to turn over but not start. So I cleaned the Neg. wire and reattached it and I could now turn the motor over with the key. After 2 tries I saw a small amount of smoke from the spot where the Neg. wire attaches to the motor. (some sort of terminal block??) Not sure what is going on here when I do get it to turn over it is very sluggish. I've attached a pic It's not my motor but it is identical (same year same hp)
Question 1. What is that part called incase I want to buy a new one? (Number 2 in the pic)
Question 2. Should the Neg. battery wire be connected to that spot or somewhere on the motor head? (Number 1 in the pic)
Question 3. Does the kill switch on the control box need the little plastic key thing jammed between it when trying to start? I only see a plastic cone (that I can push or pull in and out) with a string attached to it no plastic key thing attached.
Thank you for the help
Don

Ok so I jumped the thing off with the jumper cable again. Still spins really slow. So I pulled a spark plug to clean it (did both of them). Reading that it would run on one cyclinder I tried starting with one plug out. After a couple tries it started and ran on one cyclinder. I switched spark plugs to see if the other one was ok and it ran on that one too??? How come I can't start it with both in?

The part you are looking for is SKU: FA616497
TERMINAL BLOCK, but I think you need to check the battery ground first. It will be located directly below this part and to the back of the motor. As for the question of why it only runs on one, I would check the plug wires for grounding or arc. It sounds like the motor is grounding out with the top plug connected. As for question 3 it does need a key to keep the button pushed in or it will not start!

Thanks tracster
So the battery ground is located under that terminal block on the block somewhere? The guy before me had it hooked up to the terminal block on the screw pointed out in the pic.
Ok as for the spark plug issue. I took the plug completely out of the block and it starts. Then I put that one back in and pull the other one and it starts. But if I have them both in I doesn't start. Mabey my battery is now to weak to start it with both plugs in? I just bought it yesterday mabey I'll throw it on the charger tonight and let it trickle charge overnight and give it another go?
Thanks again for the help!

Smoke coming from the terminal block indicates a bad connection at that point. Double check that connection. There should be some type of connection from that point to the engine block too.

Once you address the connections, then you can proceed on to getting the motor started.

Double checked everything per wiring diagram. Removed the neg battery wire from the terminal block and attached it to the engine block. Terminal block does have a ground leading to the engine block also. We'll see what happens after charging the battery.
