87 Evinrude 40 Hp Tilt Issues

hey guys! im hoping someone can offer some insight on my issue.

i have a evinrude e40tlcud 40 hp vro 1987, the tilt worked last season when stored.....however this year not even a sound. i purchased a new tilt switch.....from dealer. i havent a clue so i traced the wires to the unit..

the wires coming off the tilt unit are one thin black, and a bundle of heavier guage black, blue, red, there also appears to be a separate red/whitestripe with fuse going to pos side of battery. these said red,blue,blk wires have a separate plug for each going to tilt switch, two of these said wires are blue w stripe, and green w stripe matching the tilt switch wires , and also a brown wire im guessing is a ground???

my question is, the heavier guage wires from tilt unit blk/blue/red go to what tilt wires???? and where does the brown wire go?? where does the thin wire from tilt unit go(ground side of batt?)? i checked all fuses, cleaned all connections.......still not a sound, nor and relay clicks???

anything else to look into to?

i looked under motor hood and didnt see any relays.....i also tried using a jumper wire to get some sort of polarity.


any help would be greatly appreciated....thanx in advance to all

Just hang in there, somebody will come along to help you out I'm sure. Saturday evenings are usually pretty slow here as people are out, spending time with family etc. You might want to try posting this in the electrics forum too.

ive done some investigating on the wiring issue, many other units are similar with the wiring to the unit, but none yet found are exact to mine. im guessing the black is ground, and the thin guage black is ground, but the thick red is power....to the battery or the tilt switch??? seems i have a fused red from the tilt harness that goes to the battery prior to this bundle of wires. like i said there are 3 small connectors spliced into these heavy guage trim harness.......2 look like they match the trim switch wires perfectly...just a heavier guage. i just dont wanna smoke a new 48.00 trim switch in the process. any help would be much appreciated

ive searched and searched for my answers, whats the deal ...doesnt anyone have a (red --blue -black) tilt wiring(original oem colors?
