-87 Force 85hp No thust, will not go into gear.

The other day I was out boating and after about 30-40 minutes my engine reved up of the chart and I thought that my propeller had broken. But to my surprise all the blades were fine and the problem was that I can not go in to reverse or forward. I have gone over all my linkages and they are ok (the nut at the top of the shift rod as well) and when turning the prop backwards (when in forward) I get a clicking noise as if the gears do not match up. The same thing when in reverse and turning the prop forward. I have checked my LU gear oil and found no metal scraps in it so I´m guessing that my gears are still intact.

What could have broken/changed/slipped out of place?

I will try to take the LU apart and see what I might find, but what are my "DO NOT DO THIS!"

Welcome, sounds like shift coupler at the bottom of the shift rod might have come loose?
Get a manual. Any manual is better than none.
You can get a manual at the library.

The clicking when you turn the prop backwards is normal. The drive dogs inside are shaped like ramps to help ease engagement.

Before tearing into the lower unit try checking the prop. It might be spun. Remove it and mark the back of the rubber and the prop hub. Then put it back on and try to run the engine in gear on the water. If the marks have moved, the rubber hub is worn and must be replaced. English is not your native language but if you are located in the United States, prop shops are easy to find to re-hub your prop. Just Google prop repair shops in your area. If you are in a foreign country, There are probably prop shops but I don't know how to find them or if they would carry an older American hub.
