Purchased is boat last year towards end of season.
It had been winterized 2 years prior and never had been run since. I checked and it still had antifreeze in hoses so I assumed still good. It fired and ran for about 2 minutes last year (on earmuffs) but it took jumper cables to get it to go so I decided to let it sit until weather warms up.

This year, cleaned/replaced all connections and a few wires. Changed plugs, oil, fuel filter and oil filter. About 1/3 of wot I pulled out of oilpan was water...the rest was chocolate milk colored. Decided to keep an eye on that. Finally ready to fire her up and found that over the winter atleast one of my pistons sieged. Ripped apart engine...freed pistons replaced head gasket, manifold gaskets, exhaust gasket, valve washer(?) things (not sure the tech term-sorry). Got it all back together and now it doesn't want to start. Got timing roughly set. Have compression in all cylinders. Getting sparks off plugs. It will only try to run and sometimes fire up if I have the throttle on full.

1. Is this a carb issue?
2. Is there a way to put the throttle on full without putting it in gear? I am usually solo, so removing the throttle control arm off the carb and doing ti that way is not really an option. I ate up some teeth and had to replace the starter when I used the shifter to keep the throttle on (learned the hard way).

3. Any ideas as to where I can go from here...I am planning on cleaning the carb tonight and if that dont' work, rebulding but I don't want to spend any more on this than I have to.

-JustMrWill

ps - sorry for th novel, but more info is better than not enuff.

Sounds like the carburetor is gummed up from sitting around. Do you have a 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb.

Re: 87 OMC 4.3L Question

Ok,
Bad news...
My flywheel is all chewed up and has a couple of bald spots now. Gonna have to take it in to get motor pulled and flywheel replaced. I am now wondering if the starter I recently installed might have done it (or was it trying to start with piston sieged or while in gear?). Is there much difference in starters? If I got one that matched a Chevy 4.3 engine...it should work, right?
