Hey all, let me thank all of you guys for your help last season, i bought a beater project boat for my first boat and it has really been an adventure. i replaced my ESA, replaced the bearings in my upper unit, and many other things without so much as a post!!
So here is the situation: i have an 87 Bayliner Capri with an OMC Cobra sterndrive and a Ford 2.3L engine ... On the water for the first time this season i idled for around 20 minutes sitting still will no problems. After gaining some confidence i decided to run down the river and after about a mile or so i noticed my temperature gauge was maxed so i quickly shut down the engine. I felt the water intake/exchanger and it was cool to the touch, but the red hose was hot and the black hose was cool. I squeezed all the hoses to make sure they had water in them and they did. When i turned the key back on the temp gauge was back to the normal position (around 160-170 F)... it went from maxed to normal in about 7 minutes without turning the engine or pumps at all .... confused, i decided to run back to the ramp but on the way gauge was back to maxed so i shut her down again. This time the intake/exchanger has very hot as were all the hoses.
Got back to the ramp with the trolling motor and everything back on the trailer and home carefully. At first i was thinking it was the gauge malfunctioning, but then it seemed to actually be over-heating. I was then thinking it was the thermostat, so i disconnected the water inlet into the front of the engine (above the main pulley and slightly to the right) but there was no thermostat inside, not even a bevel or recession to fit one, just an open hole into the block. Does this system use a thermostat? or did a previous owner simply take it out? or is it part of the OMC and not the engine? (note: uncovered a lot of abysmal "fixes" by previous owners over this poor boats 24 year life and have done my best to correct them)
I checked the impeller before i left to to river and everything was sound and clean.
does anyone have any thoughts or advice on things to check? i can submit pictures, go check something, just let me know.
thanks for reading!
