My motor runs fine out of the water with the muffs on but when i put it in the water with the motor all the way down it idles a little lower not a big deal but when i put it in rev it realy bogs down and wants to die if i back up for 30 sec it will flood out and be hard to start after. after backing up for a bit and then start going forward it is a bogs a little out of the hole but then runs fine and then when i come to a stop and let it idle runs good hit it again and it takes off. if i have the prop just under the water and put it in rev it runs alot better i can back up for some time with out it wanting to die.the poopet valve is weeping a little water out of that little hole in the cover not sure if that would cause the problem i am having. i have changed the plugs t-stats water pump the oil system was taken off by a prev owner so i mix the fuel 50:1 with mercury prem oil. there also is some oil below the carbs on the cover. my dads boat guy said there is a ring or plate inside the prop that stops the exahust from going back up into the motor cover while in rev but i cant see what he is talking about. i am thinking my next step it to pull the carbs off and rebuild them any thoughts??

Thanks,

Ryan

If the nose of your boat is up a bit when it's sitting still, and of course your transom has a negative angle to it, and you tuck in the motor all the way, which goes a few degrees negative, the engine will be quite a bit off level, and naturally will flood the carbs.

Operating procedure makes a difference. Trim the motor up, maybe to the trim limit when you're idling or going slow. You may want to tuck it in just before you blast off on your hole shot to make it possible to handle the boat and improve the acceleration. Don't expect it to behave for a long time when fully tucked in, as it is both flooding and has excess exhaust back pressure to deal with.

The poppet should not leak. Needs a diaphragm and a couple of gaskets. Not a big deal to do.

No, there's no plates or baffles for reverse exhaust handling. The motor is not made to back-troll for walleyes, use a 9.9 Johnson for that. There is some exhaust relief in the mid, the holes just above the water line when you're sitting still.

hope it helps

as you can see the front of the boat trailer is on the ground i had to jack up the back of the trailer so i could drop motor all the way and the motor is still leaning toward the back when i am in the water it must be on a big angle

When I got my 150 horse boat, it took a little seat time to figure out how to drive it without killing either myself or the motor.
