I Have A 88 85 Hp Force .i Took It Out The Other Day To Run To The Marina And It Ran Good Except It Only Got Up To About 25mph And It Usually Does About 34.i Stopped At The Marina For About A Half A Hour And Came Out And It Wont Start .cranks ,getting Spark ,fuel Ok .
Where To Start
How Do I Test To Make Sure The Cdi Packs Are Ok And The Stator Is Ok.
Whats The Proper Way To Check Compression.do I Take All Three Plugs Out Or One At A Time .

Thanks

Do "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs, Enforcer.

That will ID what system has failed.

Let us know what you find.

Main jets in carbs might be clogged. Not enough fuel getting through. Check the other threads like above person mentioned.

Have all the spark plugs out when you test for compression. Make sure you ground the plugs so the CDI packs don't go bad. The easiest way to ground the plugs is to put an aligator clip from the center electrode to the threaded portion of the plug. They sell aligator clips cheap in Radio Shack.

I don't believe compression is going to be your problem as all three cylinders would have to go bad at once. Without catastrophic failure, this is highly unlikely. If you have spark, I would be willing to bet that your problem is fuel supply. Have you tried starting it after spraying a fuel/oil mix in the carbs?

Thanks for the help John I have not tried that .I will try in the morning and let you know .I did take the fuel line off the motor and pumped the ball so I think I am getting fuel up to the motor .Is there a fuel pump that I should check? Is it located in the tank?

thanks

The fuel pump is on the right side of the motor looking forward. It has a metal housing over it held on with six common slot screws. The pump itself is a rubber diaphram type that costs about $16. The three check valves are inside the metal housing. They cost about $5 each but you have to be handy to replace them. If they are sticking, your engine will shut down as you give it power.

Re: 88 85hp Force Another Mystery!!!

From your information, I would say you have a blown head gasket. I would start removing the head to verify that this is the problem and order a head gasket from iboats or one of the other internet parts suppliers.

Assuming there is not any observable damage to the pistons, head and cylinders, replacing the gasket should bring your compression up and your engine back to health.

I would get a manual if you don't have one as the head bolts must be torqued properly or you will warp the head.

two pistons have holes in side .I think the sand from the fuel filter got into the carbs. I started a new thread "sand in carbs"figured this is a completly new animal .
