I just bought a replacement for my '87 DT150 SS. Changed everything over to the '88 that was good on my blown '87, just the lower unit and steer tube. '87 had oil injection system still working, '88 had that removed. I figured to leave it as is, and mix oil in the on board tank. Did that with out too much trouble. I think where I screwed up is, that the pick up tube still had raw gas in it and when I primed my fuel line, it filled the carbs up with raw gas. I now realize I should have primed the line into a gas can until I saw mixed fuel. It took about 5 min before I realized that I had a problem. I think #6 cyl is holed. I got metal filings in the spark plug. Pretty stupid mistake, and costly.
