ok, replaced the shift cable and in the drive way all is well. I used all the right tools to do it, and is very smooth with no binding. I have reverse but not forward gear in the water :(. I'm wondering if I might have the throttle cable not adjusted right and getting the correct stroke on the bracket.

You're getting forward on the trailer, but not in the water? Have you checked your prop hub?

I haven't checked the prop hub, but when I pull the lever by hand the boat will go into gear with no problem. (Lever as in the engine bay where all the cables hook to) I didn't check the height on the shift rod (just realized that) I haven't messed with it, but wonder if that's why it seems like reverse is easy to find and forward isn't.

Ahhh ... I actually know very little about the Cobras or even the Mechanical shift Stringers. I just thought if you were getting the prop to turn on land and not in the water your hub mighta' been funky.

I wish I could help ya' more than that, but I don't know that system well at all. Hang in though, someone'll be along.

Throttle cable has nothing to do with the shift cable.

So...you used the tool that holds the bellcrank in place and used the tool up at the engine that holds the length?

It's also possible your helm control is worn and doesn't have full motion anymore.

ok, thinking it over..... and have been doing a lot of reading. I think when I put the shift cable on I had the tool against the lock nut on the cable and not the fixed housing (if that makes sense) which would mean my cable is about 1/4" too long.

You say you have all the right tools? Pic?
You adjust the lever? The lever has a short area where the shift cable slides up and down.

So I pulled the outdrive off again, and the shift rod height was off. So since I have it off, I'm gonna double check everything once again. I have the tool that bolts to outdrive housing to make sure the shift cable is in the middle and the one that attaches to the cable to measure 7-9/16".
