Man, try to find some place to rebuild it. It will cost less than 1/2 the price of a new one. As an afterthought, are you sure its the starter and not bad battery cables or corroded connections.

Starter replacement is pretty straightforward. Disconnect the lead, remove the solenoid and three screws and it comes off. I agree that you should make sure it is the starter before you replace it, as they are expensive. Check all wiring, connections, solenoid, etc first. Do yourself a big favor and get the OMC manual for this motor before you start. It will help you tremendously on this job and future ones. It sounds like the Bendix gear is sticking on the starter shaft. That's the small gear on top of the starter that engages the flywheel to crank the engine. Try cleaning up the shaft the Bendix is on [it will move up and down when you turn it with your fingers ] and re-grease it with a light marine grease.

If the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel, you need to clean the shaft and gear assy. Use WD-40 and wash the shaft that the gear assy moves up and down on.

c/6

Hooty
