The problem I am having is the engine seems to miss at low speeds until the boat gets on a plane. Once on a plane it runs great.......I don't have a tach but it seems fine at WOT. I have cleaned/rebuilt the carbs, replaced the water pump and thermostats, rebuilt the fuel pump and ran a can of OMC engine tuner through the primer solenoid. It can't be a fuel problem bacause all the lines and tanks are new (just bought the boat and motor this season). I have also replaced the plugs and cleaned the connections on the ignition coils. Does it sound like I have a problem with the ignition advance? It seems like the problem only appears at the beginning of the throttle up. I don't have a timing light and I have not touched the linkage. I do have a manual, is there a quick way to check the sync/link?

Thanks in advance............

I just read another post about the advance sticking........how does one check this? Do I have to remove the flywheel?

Timing advance and retard are controled by a mechanical linkage. Disconnect the linkage from the timer base and see if the timer base rotates freely. You don't need to remove the flywheel.

c/6

Hooty

Any other ideas? The timer base does not appear to be sticking.

What size prop and boat are you running? If it has too much pitch it will not perform before it gets on plane.

Would the wrong prop cause the motor to miss? It's a 17' boat.

Cause isn't the prop, but you need a tach to know if you're propped right. You can use a shop tach as a temporary thing to get it right. Motor should top at 5800 RPM WOT with normal load if propped right.

It sounds most likely that you have an intermittant ignition problem ... probably running on 3 cylinders. Try pulling plug wires one at a time while idling. All should cause a noticable RPM drop unless that cylinder isn't firing. Things to check if you find a non-firing cylinder: plug wire, coil, and wiring/terminations to power pack. A bad coil can be verified by swapping with another cylinder and seeing if non-firing moves.

Let us know what you find.

I don't believe it's a faulty cylinder ignition because once it gets up on a plane it takes off and it only seems to do it at a certain point on the throttle.....either accelerating or decelerating.

Don't run at that "point" on the throttle. Run either faster or slower.
Another problum solved

c/6

Hooty

the problem is that the rod between the carbs is not set right. loosen the roller on the cam so it dosent touch, loosen the lower carb linkage and tighten so that both carbs are closed. adjust the roller so that it will spin and not touch the cam. that should do it, but sometimes it maybe need to adjust the throttle cable and linkage to give the motor more air and lean it out, but the carb need to be sync. mike

Check the simple stuff first. This particular series [I have one] is prone to catch a plug wire when you take the shroud off. A wire partially pulled out of the plug clip could give this symptom. Mine has.
