Hey everyone new to the forum, and new to the boaters world.

I just purchased my first boat and excited to get my hands dirty!

The motor is an 89 125 Force. At first the motor fired up at first turn of the key, and kicked off about 6 seconds later. Sounded beautiful. Upon that, it would not restart and fuel started leaking out of the top carb merely at the point where it meets the black cover. I snapped a few pics and was wondering if anyone could lead me in the right direction.

I would like to do all the work myself so I can learn more about boat motors. Any advice as to what I can do, whether it could be a gasket, or flooded engine due to numerous restart attempts. Please advise. Should I drain all fuel and start from there or do I need to take off the carb and give it a look... What do I look for, any tutorial resource would be great as well.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Tutorial resources are abundant here with the use of the search function. Couldn't surmise (I just remembered that word) what the pics were showing. Usually when a carb leaks the reason is the needle is not not seating in the seat.

Thanks for responding. The pictures are to show where its leaking. I thought it would help. Since I have no clue on any terminology here, anywhere I could learn more about the function of carb, where I can know what a needle not seating in a seat would mean, and what I would need to do to fix it.

Thanks,

Mike

If you are going to work on your engine yourself, an OEM manual is irreplaceable. Otherwise you are dependant on replies from here assuming you've presented your problem precisely, or $90+/hr mechanic that really doesn't want to work on a Force engine. Edit: I'm becoming more inclined to advise the search function here because there isn't a question that hasn't already been answered, some adnausium(sp)

I'm going to check all fittings and screws to see if anything loosened up. If all seems fine I'm going to remove the top carb and see if there is anything noticeable in regards to defects or gunk, debris. See if the float is functioning. I did some more research on the needle and seat and have a good idea now of how the carb operates and its parts.

I'll keep posted of any finds or additional questions.

Anyone please feel free to add some input.

Thanks,

Mike

Here's my input: If the leaking of fuel mix from the carbs is only when the engine is tilted that is totally normal. Or if the leak only happens when you are starting the engine with the choke engaged, that is also normal especially if you constantly engage the choke during starting. If you are not familiar with proper starting procedures do a search of the forum and you will find many posts explaining it. If it fired and ran for 6 seconds the most likely cause for not starting thereafter is mostly fuel related.
