'89 Force 125HP hard to turn over

Hi, I have installed new battery leads and a new battery, but my motor is still hard to turn over. I have checked the voltage drop over the solenoid as suggested by the Clymer manual (.2v drop normal) but the meter basically drops of the chart from the normal voltage showing really no meaningful reading. However the starter still seems to have an equally hard time turning over the motor even when I "jump" the solenoid. I suspect that the starter could be faulty, but I am getting tired of replacing parts then finding out it wasn't that at all. Anyone have any ideas or encountered a similiar problem?
By the way the motor runs fine once it starts.

1ST thing remove the plugs and turn it over then do a compression test.
If the comp is ok then the starter will need to be cleaned or rebuilt. All cylinders should be close to the same.J

Hi, Any idea what the compression should be? If not I'm sure I have it in the manual, but just wondering what this might be telling me if the starter proves to be OK?

The compression should be 130 to 150.

As to checking the starter. Put your volt meter on the solinoid/starter lead and ground. Turn the key and if the voltage drops more than 1.5 volts you have a problem. The problem can be the starter or the solinoid or the engine itself. If you ran a positive wire from the battery to the starter and the starter still dragged, then it is not the solinoid.

Next, take out the plugs and pull the engine through with a rope by hand. If the engine feels free, buy a new starter. If you have a hard time pulling it through with the rope, then you have sticking or broken rings, rusty cylinders or some other internal problem.

Thanks for the replies. As it turned out the brushes needed replacement in the starter which was an easy fix, only to discover the compression is way down in cylinders 2 and 4!! Not so easy!
