I got this motor from my brother in law and after cleaning the carb and plugs and adjusting the choke and putting some fresh gas in it starts and runs like a top. However, when under throttle moving through the water the motor is jumping almost as if there was a missing tooth or spline somewhere in the drive. It was even starting to act as if it was slipping when in gear even at idle. My first thought was something drastically wrong in to lower unit...

I drained the oil, which was clean with no metal (but did have a little water in it) so I tore it down anyways. Everything looks great with only normal wear for a motor its age. Bearings have no rough spots, bushings are tight, gears look great and the splined connections on the driveshaft are good. The clutch dog looks like new along with the water pump impeller. The only bad thing was all the fishing line wrapped up in the tailshaft seal which is undoubtably where the water came from... but back to my problem.

I just got my new seal kit today and haven't had a chance to throw it back together and trouble shoot farther. Now that I think about it, my next thought is that it could actually be a missfire. I'm used to working on car and truck engines and didn't consider the possibility that the long stroke of a 2 cycle missing could cause the motor to jump so hard, but that is my thought now. It starts and runs great but now I'm thinking that possibly under load when the spark killovolts spike up that it is enough to jump spark and ground out every now and then. I would think if it was a coil problem then it would just crap the bed and not be doing this intermittantly. It has full power but it just hammers every so often.

After I get it back together this weekend I plan to fire it up and get out the squirt bottle and see if it is jumping spark anywhere or carbon tracking down a plug or a loose magnet or something.

I was just curious if anyone else has had a similar problem or has some input on something I'm overlooking.

Sounds like the gear is sliping.
The remotewire can be adjusted wrong, if not you have to tear the lower unit down again.
Then take a close look at the edges at the clutchdog and the forwardgear.
They must be perpendicular, if they are a bit rounded then they slip.
You maybe can turn the clutchdog 180drg if the side that works with the reversgear looks better.

Like Nordin suggests, the clutch dog? Pics of the dog and forward gear?
Possible the shift cable isin't going all the way forward.
Take the cable off the connector and shift into gear.Go for a ride. If it jumps try holding it in gear?

I also have a 89 force 50 and I don't think you are dealing with a skip because a 2 strok engine 2 cyl will run quit well on one cyl but its when you go to use it that you see it has no power and the boat will barely move. My motor did something similar to what yours is doing but only 2 times on my boat when I was pulling a tuber. It sounds to me like you have something going in the lower end. And it's funny because you can look and check and look and check and not see anything wrong but there still maybe something there. Did you try adjusting the shift linkage on the lower part of the motor that's the first place I would have gone befor I pulled it apart.

Good feedback, I'll try to get some pictures up. That is what was confusing to me because I thought for sure it was gear slippage. I'll get into it over the weekend and try to figure it out. I still have to clean everything up good.

Well upon closer inspection I noticed the clutch dog was a little rounded off and I could see how it might slip, especially if the linkage wasn't adjusted properly. The reverse side looked a lot better so I gave it a 180 and threw it back together with the new seals and then fine tuned the linkage adjustment. Taking it out this weekend to see if it worked.

Thanks for the help.

It'll work, just clunk it into gear as apposed to grind it into gear. Idle RPM's are key.
