I WOULD DROP THE LOWER UNIT AND INSPECT OR CHANGE THE IMPELLER ON THAT ENGINE FIRST .

Re: 89 force not working properly

Hi tbird: I have an 89 15ft Bayliner Capri with a Force 50 - probably same as your boat. Re speed - mine does about 31mph without the stingray hydrofoil stabilizer I installed to prevent porpoising, and about 26mph with the fin installed and my motor is is good tune. Regarding your concern about your engine: 1. Get a manual for it so you know what you are doing when you work on it. 2. The holes in the back of the engine will give out a spray, not a solid stream. 3. After you get your manual, overhaul your water pump and replace your thermostat. When you do your water pump take a look at the impeller and if it looks like a piece has broken off then backflush your engine by removing the thermostat and cover and forcing water thru the thermostat opening. 4. Replace your spark plugs with the correct type (Champion L76V or equivalent)
Then take it out and try it. Don't run it anymore until you get the manual and do the necessary work or you may do damage to your motor. Best of luck!

Re: 89 force not working properly

sqeakit is right get a manuel and fix that cooling problem. but im on the other side of the pond with the speed, you might get 31mph with a ghost driver, no passengers, 1gal of gas,and no seats. i have a 14ft capri i also had a force 50 in good running condition, after i did alot of work on it. i too could only achieve 27mph, 31mph on the trailor! i have a fresh rebuilt evinrude 50 on it 17pitch prop does 35mph. thats in the water! bayliner put force motors on because they were the cheapest motors to get. if you dont care to go fast, keep the force. just my opinion :D

Re: 89 force not working properly

I have a 15' tempset bowrider, top speed 29mph (on GPS). I suspect Catfish is right as I was hoping for more speed than that when I purchased it. But....if anyone has any suggestions, besides replacing the motor with a good one, I'm all ears. Also, you mentioned a 'buzzer'. My force is a 1996 50hp - are there alarms on it?

Re: 89 force not working properly

thanks for all the advice guys i was kind of hoping it would make a top speed of at least 40 but ive been told bayliner are really heavy so dont usually go all that fast, Also where could i find a manual for the boat and motor, and can you install power tilt? and how much does it cost?

Re: 89 force not working properly

as far as the buzzer goes i was'nt sure if they had one or not but after in idle for about 5 minutes something started buzzing and i reached under the dash and felt something vibrating and looked under the dash and it was this little black cylinder about an inch around and i guess when the engine runs too hot it goes off, dont know if the 96 has it or not most of the newer ones the alarm is in the motor

tbird
Replace the impeller it isnt that hard to do and you dont want to damage your engine.
Your speed sounds about right for what you have.

Re: 89 force not working properly

does anyone know the laws about putting a bigger motor like the rating for a bigger motor? i'm going to be primarily using the boat for a ski boat and it will only do about 10 miles an hour with three people on board and it just doesnt make sense to me since the boat and motor are rated for 600 pounds

You can order a manual from this site, click manuals icon at lower left of this page.

If you only get 10mph, you have other problems as well. You may have overheated and caused severe damage by running it with a bad waterpump.

i agree with rosco. you have motor issues, or so much weight it cant get up on plane, i dont think you gave us the length of boat you have.if it is a 14ft bowrider. which i suspect it is, i think all the 14ft bayliner capri's of that era were rigged with 50hp chrysler force and a max rating of 50hp.
