89 j120 dead cylinders

my brother stopped by this afternoon and was telling me that his 89 120 v-4 was not sparking 3 cylinders.he tried new plugs,then got a spark checker tool.he replaced the timer and said no help.then someone told him that the power pack on top was the trouble,so he got one of those.said it ran for about 5 m,inutes then went back to the way it was.i am thinking a stator cant do that.am i wrong.????this is why i have a inboard.lol thanks anyone.

thank you for the link to diagnosing.ive done the ohms test for all the wires and they are rite on the money.any possibility that a new sierra power pack could be bad??any thoughts appreciated!!

ended up being debris in the slots in the middle of the flywheel.somw sort of timing slots.there were 8 of them.blew them out with air and all cylinders firing.thanks
