89 Mercruiser I/O: setting point gap?

I?m a relatively new boat owner and a true novice at engine repair/maintenance. I just replaced the points and condenser in my 89 mercruiser I/O. The boat started up and idled well. Does the fact that it started up confirm that the point gap was set correctly?

I used a feeler guage and I know the recommended gap is .022 in, but I want to make sure that I?m checking the ?correct gap.? I?m assuming that the gap I?m checking is between the revolving shaft under the rotor and the rubbing block on the point set where I put some of the lubricant provided. Is this correct? I?m a little concerned about pulling out of the slip and having it stall out when I get the RPMs up a little.

Thanks for any help/advice you can offer, Kevin

Setting the gap at .022 is just the start. You need to use a dwell meter and make sure the dwell is right. 29-31 deg.dwell Then you HAVE to check timing.
It might start right up and run great at the dock but under load it might not work at all. Burn holes in pistons and all that good stuff.
I worked with a guy who's timing light broke and I had to follow him around and clean up a lot of messes. Jerry

Nope,...

You're supposed to be checking how far apart the 2 contact faces of the points get, at the high point of the distributer's shaft....
