Hello everyone! well my troubles are i bought an 8hp johnson three years ago when i first put it on my boat the tilt lock mechanism wasnt working right so i returned it to the dealer it was purchased at and it looks like he used parts from another outboard so im not sure the exact year. I think its a late eightys engine Anyway now having a new boat and wanting to pull this thing out of the shed i thought i had a great idea and decided to replace the water pump {bad move} after the wife saying for two nights {are u sure you no what your doing} i need help. the lower unit i have managed to drop about an inch but thats it after searching around the form i see that there's shift rod that i need to disconnect but thats were I'm stuck cant see anyway to do this and the smell of gear oil is starting to stink the whole house. I think maybe a marine mechanic would have been cheaper than the divorce lawyer im going to need. Thank you for any advice in advance

Welcome to iboats!

You should be able to fine the ID plate on the side of the transom mount. If it's missing, remove the motor cover(hood) and have a look at the powerhead. You're looking for the welsh plug. It's approx. the size of a US Quarter and convex in shape. On that welsh plug is the engine/model number. We can determine the year from that number.

Knowing the model number for your motor is important when you start ordering parts. Some gear shifts have a coupling that must be disconnected to drop the lower unit. Some have a slip fit and just pull apart. The model number/year will determine which one you have. Your best bet is to grab a service manual for your motor. The steps to replace the water pump impeller as shown, step by step. All service routines are listed as well.

Hopefully, with a bit of help from the good folks here at iboats, you won't be sleeping in the dog house. :D

look on the side of what is called the leg /it will be the long housing that the lower was bolted to /should be a plate with 2 screws behind it is were shift linkage is /should be 2 bolts/screws that hold shift shaft together/ you may have to push lower unit back into place to get them out and shift F-N-R to get to them

There is no plate or disconnect on the 8hp models. The shift rod has a flat side to it that simply slides out of the coupler up top...
More than likely your driveshaft is stuck in the crankshaft. Do a search on the iboats boards and you'll see that it is not uncommon and there are several solutions you may try...
- Scott

Re: 8hp johnson big trouble

ok now Im in more trouble after searching around the forum looking at stuck drive shafts I figured I would remove the power head to shoot some wd40 for lubrication now the power head comes up about 3/4 of inch like the lower housing does and thats were it's stuck And as I'm learning that I shouldn't have started this job in the first place I now have the needle bearings from the lower drive shaft bearing laying in the lower leg. I think what i would like to do is still get the lower leg removed and then take the bottom end to have a new bearing installed. Please somebody help before the wife gets a hit man and shoots me

Re: 8hp johnson big trouble

I just had the same thing happen to me with a 1986 rude 8hp.. Lots of pb blaster and a few days of soaking, the driveshaft released from the crankshaft. I had to take powerhead completely off to get enough penetrating fluid to come into contact with crankshaft to get the booger to release. Try not to completely remove the manual starter, as this proved to be a much harder task to get the spring rewound and working again.
