8hp Stalling Issues

I apologize if this issue has been covered before. Did a search but there's so much information here I hardly knew where to start.

I have an 8HP Mercury Outboard (serial#OB315628) that doesn't want to keep running. I can start it and get it to idle (roughly) for 10 seconds or so and then it will stall. Putting the motor in gear causes an almost instantaneous stall.

The carburetor was rebuilt 3 years ago, and the motor has been used very little since then.

The fuel hose is running in the correct direction and I always have the vent cap open on the gas tank when starting the motor.

There is no fuel leaking out of the carburetor.

I tried continuously priming the bulb while running the motor and it didn't make any difference. Fuel pressure remained good and the motor stalled anyway.

I appreciate any help or advice you guys can give me on this. I would really like to get this thing running soon.Thank you in advance.

The carb may still need some repair if something wasn't right with it. Did it work after the rebuild?
Do you have good spark on BOTH cylinders?
I would also do a compression test also. All the tuning in the world won't help if you have low compression on one or both cylinders.

Yeah the motor ran well after the rebuild, but was only used once or twice and then it sat in the basement for a year or so. I'm not sure about the sparks on the cylinders, don't even know how to check that, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to this kind of thing. I'll try to find out how and then see how the sparks look. Thanks Don

Before it sat in the basement for a year or so did you treat the fuel with fuel stabilizer and spray it with fogging oil?

I know the motor was run with the fuel hose detached to use up any gas left inside it before being stored, or so I'm told. I don't think any fuel stabilizer was used. Thanks for the welcome. You guys on this site are amazingly knowledgable.
