Hello all....well, after a fruitless search of this wondrous site i cannot find the info i need. How do i replace the front motor mount on a 1968 johnson 9.5?? Theres not a whole heck of a lot of room in there...i, hoping i don't have to tear apart the front half of this thing.....i already have another good mount that i just stripped out of parts motor..Help!!....
Thanks in advance.

The short story is that you have to split the outer case to shuck out the entire motor that floats inside on the rubber mounts. An intimidating job for the novice. But you must already know that if you have salvaged a mount from another motor.

Thanks for the responses gents....Leroys ramblings is my bible..lol..i have already repaired a 68 rude 9.5 with his help. Now i have just picked up 3 more of these motors... a 66 johnson parts motor, a 73 rude (needs coils :grumpy:) and a really nice condition 68 johnson that runs beautiful....except for that damn from motor mount...
I was able to pull the motor mount out of the parts motor without taking apart the clamshells, i just had to remove everything from the powerhead to the case to do it.
I was kinda hoping there was a super secret trick to replacing this mount that the fantastic folks on boats knew about..
I will just dig in and do what i need to i guess..lol:D

That's interesting, I've replaced many of those mounts back in the day. Never heard of it being done without opening the clamshell. I guess you know something I don't. I used to say I've done the job so many times I could do it with my eyes shut--but that was about 15 years ago. I might have to open my eyes now.

O.k...heres the follow up:) It is absolutely possible to replace the front motor mount on these little engines without splitting the cases.
It takes a lot of patience and a little telescoping magnet, but i did it in around 2 hours ( with beer and cursing breaks..lol)
Remove the 2 bolts on the front outside of the case...tiller side.
Remove flywheel and throttle linkage.
Push engine back and wedge a piece of wood or whatever is handy between the engine and case ( i wedged it at the rope starter gear mount for max clearance and accessibility to motor mount)
Remove 2 bolts holding mount to engine (i could only fit a wrench in there...this is also where your telescoping magnet will come in handy for dropped bolts)
Motor mount can now be wedged out and turfed..lol
Install in reverse order....but....this again is where you need the magnet....the 1 lower carb side bolt will have to be inserted into the mount before its placed into the install position. I used the magnet to hold the bolt and then a screwdriver to wedge/hold it in place. Once its wedged you can use the wrench to start threading the bolt in....
I dropped the bolt in the case approx 6 times before i figured out which combination of magnet/screwdriver and wrench would work..lol
After that bolt the rest are easy...install the other bolt to the engine, take out your wood wedge, install 2 bolts from mount to case, re-install linkage and flywheel and your good to go!
Cheers all, and thanks for all the great info on here:very_drunk:
