9.5 wont open up!

Got a 9.5 Johnson, that I just got from a guy, and I had to open her up and reset points, because there was no fire, on the one plug. Fires on both now, but doesn't seem like it is going as fast, as it should. Is there a fast speed ajustment on the carb, and could ya tell me where. I don"t have a book on the thing yet. Thanks for any help

There shouldn't be a high speed conrol on any of the 9.5hps. My first guess would be that your dropping a cylinder as the rpms pick up. How do the spark plug firing ends compare? Can you make spark jump 3/8" (arc-over is a common problem and only shows itself with wide gaps).

carb might be the problem also maybe gummed up from sitting this will effect the high speed circut

also are u sure u are getting wide open throttle. there is a cam on the bottom of the points plate and a plastic cam follower that opens the carb butter fly. if u look close on the cam u will see a line. that is the point where the cam,follower and carb throttle should be all touching and starting to open the trottle at the same time. if not at this mark losen the little screw on the carb throttle and push the throttle arm so it touches the cam follower and cam at the mark then tighten the screw but make sure u dont move the throttle when tightening it. the cam follower is plastic arm the rides on the cam and carb throttle i have seen these brake off. is its broken good luck finding 1 they are discontinued. without a manual u will never know the little tricks like this 1 for this motor to be set up right. look on ebay for a factory manual its the only 1 i know that covers all the tricks to these motors. good luck i have a nice little motor there

what year is your motor i have a 72 9.5 sportwin. i ve done quite a bit to it and can point you in the right direction for ignition parts and such.
