Hi: this is a 1974 Merc 110, 9.8 hp. Last year I did a thorough carb. cleaning and did the gasket kits for both carb and fuel pump. I had (and might still have - another post!) coil issues, but when I solved that, the motor started, idled, trolled and went WOT perfectly.

This spring when I went to start it up, I pumped the bulb up hard, really hard, and fuel spurted out of the carb - through the throat with the choke butterfly. I stopped pumping - and the engine started second pull and after burning off the fogging oil and warming up, ran great.

This morning, I went through the routine again, bu t this time, just pumping the bulb until hard and stopping. No fuel spurtage, and it started up just fine.

My question:

Is this normal - if you really, really pump that bulb hard will fuel commonly spurt out, or should you be able to pump that bulb as hard as humanly possible and not see any spurting?

Thanks.

Re: 9.8 carb. issue

It's not uncommon for a float or float needle to stick after having sat for awhile. It is also not uncommon for it to unstick and work perfectly fine after some fresh gas has rinsed things out a bit...
- Scott

Re: 9.8 carb. issue

Thanks for that. Like I said, I pumped the bulb again this am and didn't see any spurting. I'll give it a go again this evening and see. If it spurts, what the heck, I'll tear down the carb again. It should be quicker this time and I'll know to be careful not to break or lose anything! ;)
