9.9 evanrude dies out when cowling is on .

Hello all, <br />And Thank you for all the help in the past. I recently aquired a 1974 Evanrude 9.9 that looks great and runs good but dies as soon as the cowling is installed, runs great put cowling on and starts to die open it up and picks back up. my manual only goes to 1970 so i guess i'll be looking for another manual. Any ideas?? I thought possably wrong cowling no air vents where does this motor asperate from ??? Anyways your help and ideas are greatly appreciated. also from all the reading i have been doing this was the first year the exhaust exited through the prop.

Wilbur,<br /><br />Could you be getting an Elect. short and grounding the coil or plugs? a bad plug wire might cause this. The only other thing I can think of it that the cover is perhaps crimping a fuel line. <br /><br /><br />Buck

i have a 84 35hp and it would do the same thing untill i replaced the exhaust man. gaskets.good luck

Thanks for all your replys. i cant figure out where this engine gets it's air supply when the cowling is on. No large vents or openings for air to enter engine compartment. coils are new, fuel lines are new runs real strong with lid off.

Jb you said check for exhaust leak blocking air intake is there an air intake out side fo engine compartment ????

The air comes in under the "handle" on the rear of the cover.<br /><br />What JB is refering to is an exhaust leak, inside the engine cowling. The engine likes fresh air, but chokes on burned exhaust.

Exhaust leak. Not uncommon.

Well i got the motor home put it in my test barrel and fired it up and low and behold it runs fine with the cowling on . I think that his gas was old and the barrel was to full which caused it to die, still runs a little ruff. gonna try new points and condensers, and see how it runs after that .

Hello again. Still have not got to changing the points and condensers. But did notice that the trolling idle knob is broke anyone have one laying around ?

I said check for an exhaust leak OR something blocking air intake, something like loose insulation in the bonnet.<br /><br />Please don't throw parts at it. Find out what is wrong, then fix that. Unless, of course, you just want to waste time and money.

i agree.ill bet it is a exaust leak at the manifold.i just had the same prob.it cheap and easy to fix.
