I'm thinking of buying an older 9.9 Evinrude from a "friend",he said that it runs great when he first starts it and uses it but it won't start again for some time after he shuts it off from the first start.Could this be a carb(varnish)problem or something more serious? Thanks for all the help guys. stu

It sounds to me that there are ignition problems, or even spark plugs. Depending on the year of manufacture, the first couple or so of years, (1974-1976), had points & condensers, your situation sounds like a weak conmdenser.

The later motors used a capacitor discharge system that was more efficient & less likely to fail. However even on these it could be a charge coil or power pack. But usually when the power pack goes, it does so all at once.

could be your friend's technique, too. If he shuts off the motor by flooding it, maybe the motor (already hot) is flooded when he goes to restart it. If the carb is borderline, that might be enough to cause problems.

just a guess....

It could be overheating and won't start again until it cools down. You could replace the impeller in the water pump, rebuild the carbs, and replace the powerpack yourself for about 100.00. That should take care of the major concerns.
