Re: 9.9 mercury
Been awhile. Used to have a 7.5 Merc. Sounds like the shifter linkage is stopping you.

The shift shaft has to go up and down to make the shift pawl on the prop shaft go back and forth. To do that you have to have positive control on it from the shift lever. Should be around the powerhead where the shaft meets the shift linkage is where to look for the disconnect.

Otherwise, there is the splined propshaft (slides in and out and if it went 4" it should go all the way) and a water tube from the water pump (just crammed into a rubber grommet on top of the water pump. Nuttin else.

When yur done, a little vaseline on the end of the water tube and a little grease on the splines will make it go back together easier and easier to open her up next time yur in there. Just be sure to eyeball the tube and get it stuck.

Upon restarting make sure your tell tale is a peeing right off (I think you have one). If not you may have missed stabbing your water tube into the water pump output.....and it's made out of copper and the pump housing is glass filled epoxy as I recall, so don't force it.

HTH,

Mark
