90 Evinrude-Not Charging

Hello All,

It seems my 90 hp. Evin. 1983 (E90TCTE) is not charging.

I have checked both the stator and the rectifier and both test out OK. The fuse is also OK.

Any hints on where else to look?

The only other things I have done to this that could possibly effect it are:

1. Added tach. Works fine.

2. Changed ignition switch-it too seems to work fine.

3. Added trim guage-works OK.

4. Added H2O pressure guage. Works fine.

Hi Djohns19

Is there no raise in volts at all when it runs, even with all auxillary off ?

G DANE,

Correct, no rise in voltage-at all.

Hi Djohns

Have you tried unplugging the Tach and checking the Volts? Sounds like it's limited to the Tach or ignition switch. Everything on the switch correct? As I know you have probably gone through most of it thoroughly, it seems to me if it worked before the Tach and Ignition switch, that's where I'd be lookin.

Is there an armatureplate groundwire on this model ? Try to mesure resistance from armatureplate to ground while you move throttle, I had a broken ground once, ground connection only disappeared when the motor ran, and ignition advanced.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure about the ground, I'll have a look.

Rick, Good thought. The truth is, I do not know if it charged before those repairs/mods. were made.

The tach. is easy enough to unplug and check. I'll have to take another look at the ignition switch.

Re: 90 Evinrude-Not Charging

DJohns.... The ignition switch shouldn't bother the charging system as the red (charging to battery) wire of the rectifier leads directly (via the terminal block) to the battery post of the starter solenoid.

The stator, if memory serves me correctly should read 560 ohms plus/minus 75 ohms between the yellow yellow/gray wires.... and zero ohms between either of those wires and ground. Apparently from what you've said, those readings hold true.

No offense intended, but just in case the readings were taken wrong on the rectifier (it happens), the procedure follows.

(Small Rectifier Test)

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier.

Hi Joe,

Thanks. I'll do the recheck. If I remember right, that is what I did, but your instructions are much more clear than the manual.

I'm kind of thinking that (rectifier) might be the problem. If someone, previous owner, switched the battery cables wouldn't that "pop" the rectifier? The way I'm looking at it, the rectifier contains the diode trio, much like an automotive system.-

Re: 90 Evinrude-Not Charging

Hi All,

I think we found it. The readings, second try, thanks Joe, were not consistant. When testing the rectifier, I found two (yellow) wires, had
continuity the third (red), did not.

It appears that someone, at one time, "popped" the rectifier.

According to the manual, and Joe, the readigs should be consistant. They weren't.

I'll get a new rectifier and let y'all know how it went.

Thanks everyone.

How much will you have to spen for a rectifier? If originality doesn't matter to you as much as money, you could use a full-wave-bridge rectifier from Radio Shack part #276-1185. It will perform the same electrically, and can handle up to 25 amps of currentat 50PIV. Costs $2.99. There are 4 terminals, two of which are the AC input from the alternator or stator (one may be grounded, depending on your application) and two outputs, positive and negative (ground). I put one on my Mark 55e, works better than the original, since being the voltage drop across a silicon device (the silicon rectifier diode) is .6 - .7 volts, whereas the voltage drop across the original selinium-iron-disk rectifier would be over a volt. Actually, the voltage was a little high and I made a voltage regulator and installed it behind the dash to power the radio and depth finder at a little safer level. But unless your original rectifier was of the selinium-iron-disk variety, you won't have any trouble.

Re: 90 Evinrude-Not Charging

SUCCESS!!! :D :D

I replaced the rectifier today. I'm now getting well above 12.5 volts, even at idle.

Thanks, Joe Reeves and others for steering me in the right direction on the diagnosis.

The love of my life wants to go for a ride, maybe Monday, so I'll do that and then put it up for sale. I would not sell it unless I knew every system worked flawlessly.

Thanks again-ALL!

John,

Nope, I'll admit this time, I went with Sierra. From: www.theshadconnection.com

Their service is good. The part was 1/2 the price of OEM-including shipping. It arrived in four business days.

I'm cringing as I'm writing this. :(

Forgive me all-please!!
