I got a 2002 Mercury 90hp s/n OT746797. It was been running great. A couple of weeks a go my friend took it out for about and the key was stuck in the start position and the starter bendix was engage the whole time. Pulled the starter off and tested it and the bendix would just pop up and not spin. I got a new starter and batteries fully charged, tried it and it just poped up. Yes it was in neutral.

Pulled the plugs and tried to turn the flywheel by hand and it would not rotate. Pulled the lower unit off and enaged the lower unit and the prop turns.... the lower unit is good.

Tried to flyheel with the lower unit still off and plugs out and it would not rotate. Put a big wrench on it and got it to turn bit it is very hard. As I was rotating it with the wrench the pistons were moving and are in one piece on the plug side.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 90 HP crankshaft is hard to turn

Just to give you an update on my problem.... Finally pu;;ed the powerhead and noticed on #1 cylinder one half of the conrod bearing was pretty flatened adn the other half was in pieces. Puller the other 3 pistons and the conrods would not rotate (frozen).

My question now, is what could have caused this? I'm thinking maybe a lack of lubrication (oil pump).

Thanks in advance.
