I'm thinking about replacing my 1988 90 HP Merc with the new 90 HP Merc. My 1988 has 71cc and the new 90 HP Merc has 85cc. Why does the new engine not have more than 90 HP?

I believe your engine's hp was not rated at the prop as they are now. (The new engine is stronger than your old one.)

Both engines are prop rated, Keith.

Both were designed to produce 90hp. The newer engine is more fuel efficient and produces less pollution. It may produce more low-rpm torque as well.

Good luck. :)

JB, what year did the Americans( Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude) start rating them at the prop?

Suzuki started it, around 1980. By 1985 all outboards were prop rated.
