I am looking at a boat on Saturday and it has a 2000 Johnson 90 hp motor on it. Model J90PLSSE. It is at a used boat dealer. I don't know jack about outboards. They will put the motor in a tank and run it, check the compression, etc. I think the compression should be 110-120 and no more than 10% difference between cylinders. What else should I be looking for when they run it?

If there is a hour meter look to see how many is on it.
ask about the vro if it's still in use or bypassed.
make sure they put it each gear to make sure there isn't excessive grinding.
when in forward gear have them go to wide open throttle (this is were your will notice if it is missing it's hard to tell at idle)
see how easy it starts.
have them remove the drain plug on lower unit to see if there is any water in it.
also have them remove the fill plug since this has been used in salt to make sure it's not seized up.
remove the hood and inspect that everything is how it should be.
ask for service records.

also since this is on a toon you need to look for corrosion on all aluminum including the cross members under the deck.
also inspect the trailer for salt corrosion. I'm probably forgetting something and hopefully someone else will chime in.

On my I/O leg the drain plug and fill plug are the same, the bottom one. You fill it up from the bottom plug until it comes out the top plug. Are they diffrent on an outboard?

Didn't make it down there on Saturday. Gonna make it there on Wednesday. Dealer took compression readings today and reports 130,135,130 and 130. Sounds pretty good to me. Agree?
