'90s 40hp Yamaha Tilt Problem

We think motor is an early '90s. We are having trouble raising the tilt while under way. Works fine if stopped. Raises and lowers smoothly and completely. Will lower while moving but will not raise. <br />Please be very dicriptive about the unit as we have no idea how or where to check the fluid.<br />Thanks...

Bob&Wally:<br /> I am having the same problem with my '95 40 hp.<br />While underway the tilt motor runs but it won't go up. Works fine when out of gear or even in gear if you are only idling. The way to check the fluid is to raise the motor all the way up and remove the 6 mm allen bolt at the bottom of the cylindrical tilt motor housing the sits in the motor bracket that is bolted to the transom.<br />I hope someone replies with a fix for it.<br /><br />John
