When I'm in neutral. Not really fast, but I have to quickly knock it into Reverse, then Neutral to get it to stop...Any ideas?

Thanks

Your shift interupt switch may need adjusting. This switch briefly cuts your engine just long enough for the gear to disengage. When you put it into reverse it is hitting the kill switch an allowing the disengagement.

Why do you care? Its probably nothing. If you touch it with a 2x4 (I would say hand, but that would be stupid, right?) will it stop? If it stops I wouldn't do anything at all.

Just to make sure that we are all "on the same page". Are you saying that in the driveway, with the prop out of the water, it continues to spin slowly after taking in out of gear ? If so, that is normal and not a problem, as long as you do not hear any "clunking". If you have a different situation, or I am not understanding you properly, please post back with more details.

Ditto on Waterone. I assumed he was in the driveway . . . If this happens while you are underway, then I have even less of a concern. The prop will "freewheel" when in the water and turn whatever direction the boat is moving. If it is actually propelling the boat (moving it forward) while in neutral, then you do have a problem. Don't confuse moving it forward with momentum (kinetic energy). When you are underway (in gear) at idle and you pull it into neutral, absolutely the prop will keep spinning until you hit reverse, or after a few seconds the boat comes completely to rest.

q is, is it "turning" or is it "engaged" if it is moving the boat, then you have a problem with the innterupt switch as rogerwa mentioned. Otherwise it may just be residual friction in the drive...normal

Sorry - need to clarify. It is engaged - and "propelling" me forward slowly when I take it into neutral. Clearly when I drop it into reverse I stop - and it doesn't do it every time. In addition, the last time I started it in the driveway (not being in gear at all before or after) the prop WAS turning.

Thanks, guys. I guess it's not that big of a deal as long as I can get it to disengage?

If the shift cut-out switch is not working/out of adjustment, it IS a big deal. You can destory a gearbox like that.

See this link (it's in the FAQ section)

Shifting theory of ops and cut-out switch adjustment

Chris...............

I agree with achris (good on ya mate). It' also a major safety issue. That's where we were all heading. If it is actually "powering" / "propelling" in neutral, it must be fixed.

Just to take a guess....I would suspect the lower shift cable is getting old and not moving freely.
