I have a 1991 mercruiser 5.7L "bluewater inboard" (on a Malibu ski boat, 260 hp). It is carbureted with a (I believe) mercarb 4bbl (that or a rochester 4bbl, not sure if it matters, but it's 4bbl for sure).
The motor fires up great when cold, runs beautifully and has no issues whatsoever; However, I'm having an issue getting it re-started after I shut it off when warm (if I'm picking up a skier, for example, and shut the motor off). It seems to crank endlessly, only re-starts on occasion (been towed a few times now), and when it DOES start, it seems pretty random (as in, it seems to eventually catch while cranking and fire up, but I can't get a solid read on if it's something specific that causes it to finally start, or if its just random). I did play with the choke once while cranking it and as I did it seemed to start, but again I can't figure out if it was something I did or coincidence.
I got some advice to clean the carb and choke, but I truthfully dont know enough about a carb/throttle/choke system to figure things out myself.... Can anyone help?? Could it have anything to do with plugs, wires or distributor, even though it runs perfectly fine when cold AND when I finally do get it started?
I'm taking her to a lake this weekend to camp with friends, and really don't want to have to deal with a boat that won't start while I'm there!
Thanks in advance!
