Is this something I can check with just basic tools? I am mechanically inclined but mostly on heavy equipment. Marina told me over phone it was stator for a price of $465 plus labor. I see online I can get it for $210 is it hard to do with just basic tools? I have had no prolems with this motor ever but have noticed that it hasn't been charging while I was running. Any help would be appreciated. I did put a reg. spark plug in boot to see if I had spark an didn't when plug was against block but did spark when it moved away from block.

Howdy, it won't spark when against the block, that's shorting that branch of the ignition circuit to ground. Hmmm, have spark. Takes Spark, fuel and air to fire. Charge battery to max, have had a low battery cause weak spark and no fire.
Many O/B problems are resolved/caused by the battery. If charging the battery doesn't do it, check coil/magneto, plug wires, distributor cap.
Check a manual from the library if possible.
For the charging problem connect a voltmeter
across the battery when motor is running, should read more than 14 VDC, if less than 13 check/have the alternator checked.

fish: removing the stator about a 20 min. job all you need is a impack gun,I think it is a 1 1/16 socket, steering whell puller that it.removing the stator with six allen screws.don't touch the trigger base under the stator.if you have a ohm meter check stator wire for resistance must have 600 ohms or better.try www.seilermarine.com for great prices on stator mike will help you if you also e -mail him with a question. good luck ;) ;)

I wouldn't go ahead and change the stator with a diagnosis like that. You need more opinions.

I wish I had the time to tinker on this one but we're heading to northern Maine next week. And I'm afraid I wouldn't get parts in time so off to Marina it went but I Thank you very much for your time an help and will be here alot in the future.
