Hello,

I'm in need some help/advice. I bought a boat that had a bad waterpump so I dropped the lower unit and replaced it. When I took the boat out to test it I discovered it won't go into reverse but goes forward instead. Forward also goes forward, and even in Neutral it appears the prop spins a bit. So I think I may have misaligned the shift shaft during reassembly. The lower unit oil looked fine when I changed it so I don't think it had a problem before I "fixed" it.

So I dropped the lower unit again and tried playing with the shift shaft on the unit to see if I can get it into reverse. The shaft spins freely for say 100 degrees of rotation, but the unit stays in forward the whole time. If I take the shifter all the way to one end and hold pressure on it with pliers I can get the unit in "neutral", but it doesn't stay that way once I spin the prop a bit. I'm afraid to put too much pressure on the shift shaft, does it normaly take a bit of force to shift between gears or do I have damage in the lower unit?

Thanks,

Joe
