92 OMC 3.0 L MODEL 987120 OR 987355

My starter is just kind of hanging there loosely . I t was working fine nd it still spins when I hit the ignition.

I think I am capable of replacing the starter. I found 2 broken bolts in the bilge area but have no clue where to locate replacements. I did find a refurb starter for like $140 but My starter may still be good.

any suggestions as to why the tilt is getting stuck after being on trailer a few days? it works fine once i finally get it to go down after launching it.

I think after reading lots of stuff that you guys can help me w/ this and help avoid unneccasary out of pocket expenses that I could use on new gear.

NOW I JUST WENT OUT THERE AND I am wondering where the other half of the 2 broken bolts are and what to do now???

Can you remove the starter from the engine? If you can, the other portion of the bolts is probably up inside the block yet.

Ayuh,......

They're probably Still in the Block......

If by chance they're slightly Loose,... You might be able to work them out.....

Other Wise,.....
Pull the motor,+ Flip it over to get at them....

Thnks Don S and Bond-o.

Im gonna go out there again and try and work them out. The only problem is that I cant even tell where the were in the first place. Any idea?

Im thinking that If I loosen the bracket that holds it in place ...that I will be able to pull it off w/ ease.....keeping my fingers crossed !!!!

If so, then do you think its possible to tap/ or work them out from the inside out? doe sthat make sense?

Ill post pics w/ in an hour !! Thanks alot !!!

greatly appreciated ,

Go get the starter off first, and see if the bolts stick out enough to get ahold of, don't try to work out every possible situation and solution in your mind when it's not necessary.

Reach under there and feel where the bolts are at, or try a mirror and flashlight.

OKAY,
I was able to pin point my situation now. The 2 bolts are rather easily to reach up under and stick my finger into. a little bit of working room from underneath but I cant get my head under there to see. w/ a mirror, I was able to tell that the long bolt with about 4 inches of no thread is broken of about an 1/8 inch up in the hole . The other bolt is broken off about 1/4 in ch up in the hole. I really have no clue as to try and work them out from here.

what should I try next. Ill do what ever it takes.:D

Pull the engine, turn it upside down so you can get at them to drill out. A Left hand drill bit sometimes works.

I had a feeling you were gonna say that . So ummm, are you gonna be around the next few days to help me thru this? I think I can handle it as long as i photo every thing along the way . or I woul dnot mind paying a few hundred dollars to have this fixed but Im thinkin it will cost a whole lot more than that to pull the motor. You have anyidea what a ballpark would be ? under $300 Ill pay. over $375 Ill give it my best shot!!!!

Im not a mechanic, I am a wallpaper hanger. Advise me accordingly !!! Thanks Don you really motivated me today to get out there and at least try and fix her by myself. I will return the favor to the next in need !!!

Re: 92 OMC 3.0 starter and tilt

Well, I'm a boat mechanic, and I have to go to work the next few days. But trust me, there are enough people here to walk you thru this.
You need to start by removing the outdrive.
Remove the lag bolts holding the front motor mount to the stringers.
Remove the 2 nuts (3/4" socket) on the rear mounts.
Disconnect the shift and throttle cables.
Disconnect the battery cables from the battery, then from the engine.
Disconnect the main harness plug
Disconnect and plug the fuel line.
Disconnect the water hose from the transom shield.
Disconnect anyother wires that may be connected for trim pump, senders etc. Mark em.
Lift the engine up.
DRAIN The oil, water in the block, gas in the carb etc. so you don't loose it when you stand the engine on end.
Now, you can either stand it on the flywheel (remove flywheel housing and coupler first) or turn it on its side with starter side up.

NOW, get the bolts out. or take it to a machine shop and have them do it.

Re: 92 OMC 3.0 starter and tilt

1 more question befor i star the project.

It seems to me and it looks like this.

The bolts were obviously vibrated out approximately 3/8 of an inch before they snapped. I have been running this newly bought boat since march 17th maybe 50 hours now. I had started the boat probably 5 times on the water yesterday before they snapped.

SO WHAT I AM SAYING IS THAT I DONT FEEL THAT THEY ARE RUSTED IN OR FROZEN OR LOCKED.

They would seem to be rather loose under the circumstances. . Isnt there someway to to get a bite with something to at least try and get a twist going ? or do you think I would damage the block by hammering underneath w/ out seeing exactly where the point was going?

Re: 92 OMC 3.0 starter and tilt

IF they are loose, put pressure on them with your finger and see if they will turn. Think, about what you need done, don't expect everyone to have all the answers. If they are loose, maybe a pencil eracer would turn it.
Think outside the box

Trying to drill upside down would probably end up costing you an engine block.
