Go pull off a spark plug wire. Remove the spark plug. Reattach the spark plug boot. Ground the plug somewhere on the engine block. Turn on the ignition and attempt to start it. Make sure it's dark enough that you can see the spark. Make sure you are on muffs.

You stated you looked at the plugs and didn't see any water. You didn't say you ran a spark check.
From the way your engine got into this condition it would be highly doubtful that the net result would be an ignition module failure. Unless there are details you are leaving out here.

The distributor mounted module and the later exhaust mounted modules are one and the same.
