Hey guys I have attached a video for you to hear the noise. It seems strange to me but the motor is running perfectly fine. I notice this noise only at first when I accelerate. If I continue to accelerate through it goes away. I don't want to be out on the water and have it a bigger issue so just want your thoughts on if its normal and if not what you think it could be.

Thanks for taking the time

Yes, it has a sort of strange sound. I have no idea what it is. I would check the powerhead for loose parts that can rattle.

ok I will check that. It has this buzzing sound which you can hear about 2-5 seconds into the video. Then it goes away as the motor accelerates...?

Plastic flywheel safety cover rubbing flywheel, likely one of the wing nuts missing/loose....

Thank you. You are the first person to point me in some kind of direction. Excuse my lack of knowledge what do you mean by plastic flywheel safety cover? Do you mean the clip that holds the motor lid down?

Your flywheel is sitting on the top of the engine (like wearing a hat on your head), has teeth that mesh with the starter to crank over the engine. He is speaking about a cover at or around the flywheel, that has some type of fasteners securing that cover. Could be rubbing against the flywheel and with the teeth, could make that kind of whizzing noise.

When I first heard your video, I thought it was coming from the lower unit due to wear in gear housing. Check all that easy stuff, I think his idea is spot on.

Smurph thanks for the description. I have a bit of OCD and things like this drive me nuts. I knew the first time I heard it, it wasn't suppose to sound like that. I was hoping for an answer like the one above because it seems easy enough to fix and not require much or any $. I'm actually excited to get out to my boat again so that I can pop the cover off and take a look for loose or missing nuts.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to help me.

At low Rpms my older Merc was making the same sound...turned out being a simple loose bolt off the kicker bracket that was vibrating off the transom. Could just be that easy

I think I may have found my problem. At least its a good start. Turns out the mechanic who did my service left one of his sockets in the leg. I thought it would be easy to just slip my attachment socket on it and pull it out however it gets caught right at the end. I tried cleaning around the rim and sprayed dw 40 but she still seems to not want to wiggle out.

Any suggestions on how I can get this out?

If it won't come out the top, and it is not stuck on the trim tab bolt, the gearcase needs to be dropped to get at it. Can you put some silicone on it and stick it to the trim tab bolt? How about putting it on the trim tab bolt and pushing a wine cork thru the hole to hold it in place? You can get it out the next time you need a waterpump service.

Not a bad idea from Chris here, then after doing that take it out and check for the noise. If it has eliminated it, then worry about how to remove the socket.
