Hello this may be a little long sorry.
i have a 1993 mercury 90 HP outboard i got into the shallows with it and ended up with it in the sand, it sucked up enough to stop the stream from coming out the back to just a dribble.
i stopped the motor and lifted it out of the water until i got off the sandbar, when i put it back down in the water i was back by it and had the wife start it up there was a high pitched buzzer coming from the dash I had her shut it right off.
After the motor cooled I started it back up it still would not pump water but no alarm sound.
My question is after I drop the bottom and check / replace the impeller how would I check the motor and what would I look for.
Thanks

You'll also want to take the thermostat/poppet valve assy out for cleaning/inpection.

When you have the lower unit off, I'd hook up a water supply to the motor's water tube, and flush with the thermostat removed.

You also might try blowing air up the water tube before you flush, this may get some dried material out. You may need to backflush or blow air through the telltale hose to get any material out of there.

HTH and Good Luck...........ed

Sand doesn't necessarily destroy anything. I have had plenty of sand through my motor with no issues. You need to back flush through the telltale and run it on a hose til it's clear. It has most likey got into the water passages and hardened there.

Thank you
I just finished removing the lower unit and taking the impeller assembly apart I had some sand there but not a lot, the telltale hose was packed I removed it and cleaned it out, with that removed I held the garden hose to the water intake tube it came out of the fitting at the base of the motor with no problem. should i take the water pump assembly in the lower unit apart along with the thermostat?
Thanks again
