i got a little more done today drilling out rivits and removing supports and the 50 pounds of icefoam under the deck. i didnt have much time, its still gets dark way to early. i did hava a little time to check out some of the suppliers you guys suggested. thanks ez that is defiently the best price goin for the vinyl even after shiping.

jas, that u.s. composite epoxy sounds great how much do you think i need for my boat 16' x 5' beam, on ext ply?

thanks agian guys. hopefully this weekend i can get alittle more done cleaning and preping for gluivit. probably have to wait till it warms up alittle before i apply. maybe i can start tracing plywood. i work almost every weekend and have a side job i gotta get done and with the days still pretty short i probably wont have much time on the boat. but aleast i can surf iboats all night and learn and prepare where esle would i have got the ladder idea:facepalm:

I have a hunch that you could go with the 2 Gal Resin/85 oz. Med Hardner kit they have. (for sure get the pumps too). I don't think you could squeeze what you need out of the next step down. One of the other fellas who has finished a 16 footer will step in and correct me if I am off on that.

I picked up the 5/1.6 package and hope to finish both of my boats with that. We'll see but I am pretty sure I can swing it.

The weather has been alittle better so i got alittle more done. Nothing picture worthy but progress is progress, the side-job that is paying for most of this resto is nearly complete. I should be ordering epoxy, gluvit, vinyl, and carpet on friday, thanks again jas, i think i will go with the 2gal kit.
I also expect to need wire wheel, rivits, plywood, glue, sealant, foam rollers, plenty of screws, new cleats, and a bunch of electrical crap so i can have everying ran nice and clean for fishfinder, radio, lights, and of course a 12v cig lighter. i am not about to run out and buy a fishfinder and radio just yet, i know how these projects seem to go over budget:redface:so i would like to run the wires and have a bussbar set up, that way if i wanna add stuff later it wont be so bad

hopfully i will have some good pics for you guys by the end of the weekend!!

so.. i powerwashed and scrubed the inside of the hull, just when i was about to take a wire brush to it, my niegbor stoped me. He says the alumimum as a anodized coating, if i scrape it out i"ll be in trouble. i can already see spots where its pitting, and under the foam it looks super clean(pics in the morning). on most of the restos i see guys arent painting or coating the inside of the hull, and i have seen some where guys are wire brushing or sanding all the anodized coating out and not replaceing.

so should i.............clean what i can with a scrubbrush and water, apply gluvit then prime and paint with regular aluminum paint?.............wire wheel the coating away and reapply a anodized primer and paint...............gluvit on top or under paint/primer?

any help on this would be appreciated thank guys!!

Starcraft hulls are not anodized.

Anodizing involves placing a sheet of aluminum into a chemical acid bath, quite often acetone in laboratory experiments. The sheet of aluminum becomes the positive anode of a chemical battery and the acid bath becomes the negative. An electric current passes through the acid, causing the surface of the aluminum to oxidize (essentially rust). The oxidized aluminum forms a strong coating as it replaces the original aluminum on the surface. The result is an extremely hard substance called anodized aluminum.
Anodized aluminum can be nearly as hard as diamond under the right anodizing process. Many modern buildings use anodized aluminum in places where the metal framework is exposed to the elements. Anodized aluminum is also a popular material for making high-end cookware such as frying pans and pots. Heat is distributed evenly across anodized aluminum, and the process of anodizing provides a naturally protective finish. It is possible to use another electroplating process to make anodized aluminum look like copper or brass or other metals. Special dyes can also be used to color the anodized aluminum for decorative uses.

You can use a battery tester on it because anodized aluminum does not conduct.

As with all aluminum, it MUST be prepped properly, especially with the use of a Self Etching Primer.

Here are the pics.......... you can see where the hull is discolored and pitted. I i think thats why i was told its anodized(its not). So what i need to know now is, whats the best way to clean this up? how abrasive can i get? Obviously i dont wanna wear thru the hull. Is it a bad idea to used a wire wheel? i just wanna clean around the rivits real well before i gluvit.

check out the big pile of sealant in the bow!! i think its from the factory cause it was under the floor and casting deck. I checked out the outside of the hull and see not reason for all that gunk, i think maybe somone was looking for a good place to get rid of extra sealant.

I have the same pile of sealant in the bow of my islander as well. But there were spots where it was not stuck down and it was pitting the aluminum. I used a screw driver and pliers to lift off as much as I could and then used a wire wheel on a die grinder to get the rest. That crap really was stuck down, also found what appears to be a little piece of rubber seal that was stuck in the bottom of the sealant. Am hoping that I have not created a leak in mine now, will have to wait till I get it all cleaned up before I find out for sure. But even if there is a leak there I am going to gluvit the inside of the boat anyway so that will help. But I will do the best I can to seal any leaks before using the glovit. And I think that the sealant in mine is the same color as yours, so really wondering if the factory did put that stuff in or not.

Yah, that gunk in the bow is factory sealant. Pretty much all of our old Starcrafts have it, eh!

Might just be the photo but I can't see any serious pitting there MD. If you like you could always do a light sanding and skim coat some JB Weld or MarineTex.

That hull looks clean man!

yeah the pitting isnt bad. i just wanna clean up around the rivits before i gluvit i would like to paint the interior hull above the deck, but wasnt gonna paint below. unless its suggested.........

finally ordered some materials. Epoxy, vinyl, and gluvit should be here in about a week. i am having a little trouble picking out carpet, i know i want blue but im not sure what brand. it only goes on the top of boxes and will be sat on, so i want good thick and soft stuff, any recommendations??

I also picked up some tools and supplys at HF. looks like it gonna warm up just in time!!

I cleaned up the hull alittle better and found a few holes. they are pretty small. what can i do about it? fill it with jb?, drill out and install a rivet?

I think JB makes a special product for aluminum, and I have heard some others on here talk about another product but I can't remember the name at the moment. Open bows are great and you will have a nice boat when your done.

yeah i have done a lot of reading and i think i im gonna go with the jb weld or smailair marine product, then i vinager wipe down, cz primer and rusto paint for the inside of the hull. i hope now that the foam is out and not holding water i can stop the corrosion. i will replace with pink sheet foam. the out side of the hull will have to wait till next year for paint, but there is no corrosion on the out side.

i've got materials coming daily so hopfully i will get somewhere this weekend
