In case the pros are out voting, I'll chime in.
Some auto parts stores like Autozone have a free tool loaner program, including compression testers. Check around your area. Also, here's the procedure that was given to me...
Basically
1) remove ALL the plugs.
2) check the compression gauge end to make sure it's not longer than the spark plug threads. And ground out the plug wires (nail in the boot placed against the block works).
3) screw the gauge into a plug hole.
4) jump the starter solenoid from the power lead, or turn the ignition until the gauge stabilizes.
5) Write down the number on the gauge.
repeat for each hole.
